What is self-employed hairdresser insurance?

Working as a self-employed hairdresser offers great flexibility. Whether you choose to rent a chair in a salon or barbershop or work as a mobile hairdresser you are in charge of your own time and can focus on looking after your clients as best you can.

Getting insurance as a self-employed hairdresser can be a confusing business. But whether you specialise in colouring, cutting, hair styling or even hair extensions, you’ll need to make sure you have the right cover in place.

Why do self-employed hairdressers need insurance?

Working with a sharp tool and hot appliances will always mean a degree of risk, both to you and your clients. You’ll need to make sure you are protected if a client brings a claim against you. This could be for a treatment which has gone wrong, or even something as simple as dye getting on their clothes and needing professional cleaning.

What type of insurance is best for self-employed hairdressers?

  • Public liability cover

This protects you financially from any claims made against you by a third party. For example, if you damage a client’s furniture with hot straightening iron, or are drying a client’s hair in a salon, and another customer trips over the flex, you could be liable for any compensation they might claim. Having public liability insurance in place means you don’t have to worry about finding extra funds to pay any damages costs.

  • Treatment risk insurance

Even the most experienced hairdressers and barbers have things go wrong from time to time. If a service you offer doesn’t go to plan, your client could claim compensation. It might be a bad reaction to a new styling product or burns from bleach left on too long, but if your client is hurt as a result of your treatment, this policy protects you financially from claims.

What if I have a trainee or apprentice hairdressing student working with me?

By law, if you have any staff working for you, even if just on a part-time or apprentice basis, you need to make sure you have employers’ liability insurance cover in place.

How can I save money on hairdressing insurance?

There are a few tips you can try to lower the cost of your premiums. Be aware though that cutting corners on the amount of cover you have in place could end up costing you money in the long run!

  • Always compare insurance costs from at least three different providers.
  • Make sure you have the right level of cover in place for your business. Liability insurance is usually available up to £1, £2, or £5million
  • You might be able to save money by paying annually for your premium, rather than spreading the cost monthly
  • Consider raising the excess on your policy. This is the amount you pay out upfront before the insurance company will cover claim costs.
  • Only pay for the cover you need. Check with your provider what is included in your policy, as if you don’t have any staff, for example, you won’t need to pay for employer’s liability cover.
